There was a period in 2006 where if you were to believe NME and the Drowned In Sound message boards that ¡Forward, Russia! were going to fill stadiums, they didn't. 20 years later and I'm amazingly surprised how well this album has aged, in fact with their annoying 'ffs I have to cut and paste here' bandname and calling all their tracks numbers along with their melding of shoegaze, post-rock, disco-not-disco, math-rock and post-punk they sound bang on time with the mid-2020 music of today.
¡Forward, Russia! formed in Leeds in 2004, from the ashes of other bands that never truly went anywhere; they are Whiskas (guitar), Tom Woodhead (vocals, keys), Katie Nicholls (drums) and Rob Canning (bass). They released a much-admired debut album, Give Me a Wall, in 2006, and now they’re back with a 20th Anniversary repress. Available on vinyl for the first time since initial release, the package is a limited edition clear 12” with new lyric sheet & sleeve notes from Steve Lamacq.
