STORYTIME: When I was first getting into funk and soul, it was mainly of the Northern Soul, Motown and Stax variety, super catchy and danceable 45s. Then I picked up my first Funadelic CD at a Virgin megastore for £3 (worth a punt, right?) and it was this very album. LIFE CHANGER! I felt like like was being transported down an unhinged psychedelic space funk rock wormhole, these were songs loaded with politics, sex and letting yourself be free of societies restraints. Mad how a record can do that? Really excited for the new audiophile editions and to slip into that wormhole all over again.
- Remastered direct to lathe from original master tapes by Dave Gardner (all analog)
- Vinyl comes in a gatefold jacket
Free Your Mind And Your Ass Will Follow is the second album from funk innovators Funkadelic, arriving in 1970 mere months after their trailblazing debut. Famously originating from a single LSD-fueled marathon session, the record saw the band honing their songcraft, while still allowing plenty of space for mind-bending exploratory jams. It marked the official introduction of legendary keyboardist Bernie Worrell, and would go on to chart at No. 92 on Billboard’s Pop chart.
