On Gold Horatio, Jon Mckiel and producer Jay Crocker (JOYFULTALK) skew folk and pop forms with nimble reel-to-reel engineering, vintage electronics, dub logic, revisionist grooves and quietly virtuosic instrumental work. Continuing the lineage of 2020’s Bobby Joe Hope (Aquarium Drunkard: “an unlikely masterpiece”) and 2024’s Hex (Pitchfork: “oddly affecting” and “unexpectedly beautiful”), Gold Horatio further crystalizes Mckiel’s unique song world: a portal to an elsewhere, a mirrorworld, where the language of the mind is free to sing with great lucidity.
