Squeeze: Crystal Clear Vinyl LPWIGLP498X
Label: Domino Records
Release Date: 25th February
Indie, country, folk, electronic pop and Nu-Metal (!?) - OH MY! I've been around this musical block long enough to know an 'Album of the Year' contender when I hear it and SASAMI's 'Squeeze' is it, it's eclectic, just the right amount of challenging but most importantly, this thing is just dense with tunes. Very few artists could do Bjork one moment then Deftones the next and then bright Secretly Canadian'esque indie folk the next and each song absolutely slam and sound like such a coherent artistic vision.
For those who dig: Spellling, Zola Jesus, IAN SWEET, Billie Eilish, Phoebe Bridgers, Lucy Dacus, Deftones... Oh and the greatest musician in the world Ty Segall produces some tracks.
With ‘Squeeze’, out on Domino, SASAMI explores her wide spectrum of moods - from raging at systemic violence, to wrestling for control in her personal relationships. It hammers home a sentiment of ‘anti-toxic positivity’ and showcases SASAMI’s vicious honesty and brutally uncompromising vision, partially inspired by the Japanese yōkai folk spirit called Nure-onna (translation: wet woman), a vampiric deity that has the head of a woman and the body of a snake.
SASAMI announced ‘Squeeze’ at the end of last year with a dual single release of ‘Skin A Rat’, which was hailed by Rolling Stone as a Song You Need To Know, saying it “lands a whole bunch of different blows, each harder and more unexpected than the last. And, like all good rock & roll bruisings, the moment it’s over, you’re ready to spin it back for more,” and ‘The Greatest’, which Nylon called “an electrifying rock opera.”
‘Squeeze’ was produced by SASAMI, with a handful of the tracks co-produced by Ty Segall. Other notable contributors include Megadeth’s Dirk Verbeuren, actress and comedian Patti Harrison, Hand Habits’ Meg Duffy, Vagabon’s Laetitia Tamko and King Tuff’s Kyle Thomas, amongst others.
