Good times for Appalachian folk being given a perfectly suited glow-up, Angela Autumn leans into the twang, the confessional storytelling and warnings of the worst of modern trappings but does so indie rock crunch with pleasing country hooks.

Angela Autumn has always been drawn to the mountains. Raised in the Appalachian region of western Pennsylvania, she channels that landscape in her voice, funneling the timeless influence of mountain streams and rolling foothills into her genre-bending folksongs. With her second album, though, she proves she's every bit as interested in the modern age as tradition. Believer is a musical melting pot of a record, blending the rustic music of Autumn's past with the hybridized sounds (including indie rock, psychedelia, pop, and gothic country) of her present. Audiences still call her "The Rose of Appalachia" — a nickname that nods to the Allegheny roots and clawhammer banjo skills that helped her blossom into a critically-beloved solo artist. Released on the heels of support tours with Bonny Light Horseman, Cut Worms, Langhorne Slim, and others, BELIEVER was created in collaboration with Isaiah Beard, the multi-instrumentalist and producer known as Baerd. The two had already worked together on "Electric Lizard," a viral hit that helped transform Angela Autumn from an old-world folksinger into a boundary-blurring, multi-genre musician back in 2023. With its sonic swirl of indie textures and abstract Americana, "Electric Lizard" served as a harbinger of new songs to come. Across the record’s twelve tracks, traditional folk and clawhammer banjo cross-pollinate with grungy guitar, studio experimentation, and indie hooks to form a hybridized sound as Angela paints pictures of both the personal and profound. With songs that tackle themes like self-reflection, imagination, and nature's ability to heal, Believer is caught halfway between nature and the landscapes we create in our own minds: experimental, eclectic, and caught in mid-evolution, pushing beyond the primitive twang of her Appalachian influences to chase down a sound of her own making. Take a listen. It'll make you a believer.
