It's Wendy's deft guitar picking, with a folk pop bounce but with some electronic critters causing mischief and synths weaving in and out of focus. It brings the fantastical, the whimsical into soft country folk.

Sympathy at home is the debut physical release by Whait, comprising musicians Wendy Eisenberg and more eaze - aka Mari Rubio. Following a celebrated digital-only debut hosted by the Residence Project, sympathy at home folds in both artists’s musical languages into a singular lingua franca; an intuitive, spontaneous music that yields surprising moments of joy and discovery. Whait’s music is bathed in love and celebration, a continuation of both artists’s deep-grooved furrows in current human music.

Recorded largely in the duo’s home studios in New York in-between vigorous touring schedules, sympathy at home displays an intuitive dialogue between the two, a testament to the individuals’ labyrinthine connections to the experimental, folk, electronic and “avant rock” underworlds but also to their interwoven lives. It arrives at a particularly busy point in the members’ trajectory through the landscape. Eisenberg’s self-titled 2026 album marked a milestone for the artist, transmuting their multi-genre mastery into a folk music informed by the baroque pop of Judee Sill, Van Dyke Parks et al swimming in generous melody and structural invention. More eaze’s career posits her as a musical nexus that, along with countless collaborations and guests, boasted two solo 2026 solo albums for Thrill Jockey. Her work across these two records expanded her core instrumentation of violin, electronics, guitar into beautiful meditations on form and emotion.

On sympathy at home, the gentle, exploratory synchronicity between Rubio and Eisenberg opens up to the listener from the onset. Human music sparkles with Eisenberg’s guitar resonating with Robbie Basho-esque melodic complexity before their double tracked vocal harmonises to heaven. Rubio’s violin blooms with sympathetic keyboards before a wistful but defiant vocal delivers the chorus line, swallowed up by cascading rainbows of electronic colour. Here the protagonist looks back on previous versions of the self, it’s a song about coming to terms with evolution and becoming. First single Falling down continues the dynamic, with a guitar and drum machine providing a rolling backdrop to both artists’ vocal performances twisting into surprising melodic spirals. The result is redolent of The Roches’ oblique take on Americana filtered through the 2000s deconstructed pop music of Chicagoans Sam Prekop or The Sea and Cake. For two artists so associated with abstract or sideways music, it’s gratifying to see Eisenberg and Rubio sculpt song-forms in their own image. Newness uncurls slowly and with improvisatory charm, chiming guitar strings in conversation with playful percussion and close-mic’d movements. Eisenberg’s vocal is loose, diaristic, completely relaxed and affectionate for the moment.

Like you sees more eaze further explore her own voice, an approach also in evidence on 2026 album sentence structure in the country. It’s a guitar-led, weaving narrative that serenely collapses into Side 2’s centrepiece, the 12 minute Cache issue. A long form exploration of space, the piece evokes an open expanse, dancing guitar and electronics chasing each other through the sparseness. The two musicians are centrifugal forces yawning open a fantasyland of possibilities, gentle and guiding simultaneously. Sympathy at home closes with a question. On Don’t go, chasing Eisenberg’s chromatic guitar colours an open vocal, with Rubio’s violin teasing out harmonies. The closing refrain “we didn’t have to fight, remember?” whether intentionally or not sums up the pair’s musical synchronicity while leaving the question open. Whait posit a state of constantly becoming, embracing change and mutability, sometimes resolving and sometimes finding transcendence in openness to the moment.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0505/7734/2621/files/21af5384-16e5-c6e4-f3ca-9bbc45953a85.jpg?v=1792590938
