The hip hop cover album is tricky terrain, it's so easy for it to be the naffest and edgeless thing you've ever heard, it can often be a little day-time family friendly music festival and thus suck the thrill of the genre right outta things. Kassa Overall though has made, what I may believe to be the definitive and the final boss 'hip hop cover album' with his leftfield avant-garde post bop and spiritual jazz takes on The Notorious B.I.G., Wu-Tang Clan, Dr. Dre, A Tribe Called Quest, OutKast, Digable Planets and Juvenile. What I love is he uses these songs as a jumping off spot like the jazz greats would take an American standard and run wild with it. BANGS.
