Shop favourites Spencer Cullum, Erin Rae and Hollow Hand are making that hunker down 70s English rock and they've got synth/guitar instrumental cosmonaut Rich Ruth in so you don't know whether you're tethered to a hoppy pub or the stars - in between is nice.
Situated near huge cliffs, on the rugged south coast of the Isle of Wight, Chale Studio sits
within one of the oldest buildings on the island, dating back to the 16th century. Many
have called this place home, some for just a few days, others for much longer.
Recently, it became such a thing for Spencer Cullum, Max Kinghorn-Mills (Hollow Hand),
Erin Rae alongside their backing band of Dom Billet (drums), Harry Bohay (bass) and Rich
Ruth (guitars/synths), a group of musicians who have shared stages together in many
different forms, but never written together until now. It was here, in a four-day burst of
kinship and craft, that they recorded what would become a daring and often decadent
collaboration, and their debut album as a collective.
Formed of ten beautifully colourful songs that sing to a shared love of 70s British folk
songs, acid-folk oddities, and vintage children’s television soundtracks, the Banquet Rock
LP weaves together bright vocal flourishes with gorgeous instrumentation: pedal steel,
pump organ, synthesizer, rhodes piano and more. Such work comes together to build a
vibrant and often playful ode to the spirit of the shared experience, a collection of songs
brought to life inside a 16th century banquet hall, a rich and spontaneous capturing of a
communal moment in time.
