The secret to Tindersticks new music still sounding so good now as it did in the 90s is that their smokey crooned chamber jazz pop always sounded like a revered songwriter coming back into bloom in their 60s.

Few bands do smoky, string-laced melancholy quite like Tindersticks. Since forming in Nottingham in 1991, Stuart Staples' baritone and the band's lush orchestral arrangements have made them one of the UK's most enduring and idiosyncratic acts. Their new album continues a run of critically loved records, blending chamber pop, lounge jazz and soul into something cinematic and deeply atmospheric. This is late-night, lights-down listening from a band still operating at the height of its powers.

For this album Dave Okumu brought his electric guitar to the record, best known as the frontman of the Mercury-nominated The Invisible, and a producer and player whose work runs from Jessie Ware’s Devotion to Grace Jones, Tony Allen and Amy Winehouse. Julian Siegel joined on saxophone, the strings feature on two songs led by long-time collaborator Lucy Wilkins.
