The Drums arrived in the late 00s/early 10s with the kind of hype that can really jar, sitting at the tailend of a time when NME's relevance was burning it's last embers, Pitchfork was at it's peak and the BBC's Sound of poll kinda mattered. This lo-fi surf-pop indie outfit appeared with drum machines, cooing vocals and tunes so hooky they soundtracked a decade of adverts. Listening now, this record is loaded with the kind of insta-indie pop satisfaction that made the CD purchase worth it. 

The Drums’ Portamento captures the band at their most direct and emotionally raw — a defining slice of early 2010s indie pop that blends jangling guitars with stark, introspective lyricism.
