Junior Boys bring more melancholy to the disco, in fact this could be their most introspective and grief-stricken of their records to date. Not that their music is ever a dour affair, it's a dubby, r&b, 2-step garage, synth-pop disco where we're all taking in all our most intense feelings with a kind catharticism that finds hitself horseshoeing to utter uphoria.

More than two decades in, Jeremy Greenspan and Matt Didemus are still electronic pop’s great melancholics. Folding arty synth-pop, post-disco R&B and 2-step garage into something hushed and deeply personal, Junior Boys have never chased trends, and their devoted following is the reward. The Gore shares the intimate, late-night pull of landmarks like So This Is Goodbye and Big Black Coat, filtered through that unmistakably wintry, Hamilton-born sound. It’s music for headphones and close listening, but also for spontaneous singalongs and unintended dance moves. Born from the loss of Jeremy Greenspan’s father and a close friend, The Gore is the more elaborate twin to 2022’s Waiting Game. It brings that record’s subtle, half-heard ideas into full view, and reaches back to the haunted early albums that inspired a generation of artists.
